Leadership Insights: Building Strong Teams and a Stronger Industry

Structural engineering has taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and precision—not just in buildings but in leadership and teamwork. Over the years, I’ve realized that leading a team is more than just delivering projects; it’s about understanding the impact of our actions and decisions on those around us.

Beyond our professional roles, we all wear different hats—director, runner, parent, golfer, writer, mentor, and more. Each role brings its own challenges and rewards, shaping how we show up in our careers and for those around us. The key is finding balance between our responsibilities while staying committed to growth, well-being, and leadership.

A few years ago, I decided to turn my passion for health and well-being into something meaningful for both my community and the industry. Becoming a yoga teacher and health coach helped me see leadership from a new perspective—before we can guide others effectively, we need to first manage ourselves, our habits, and our well-being.

By integrating health-conscious practices into my work environment, I’ve seen tangible benefits: Stronger, more engaged teams; Better project outcomes; A culture that prioritizes both performance and well-being.

That being said, leadership is a two-way commitment. As leaders, we create the space for growth, engagement, and collaboration—but success depends on the commitment from both sides. A thriving team isn’t just built by leadership efforts; it requires individual accountability, openness to change, and a shared vision. When both leaders and teams work together toward a common goal, the results are truly transformational.

High-quality projects, efficient delivery, and happy clients all start with a balanced, committed, and motivated team. When we recognize the different roles we play in life and learn to integrate well-being into our daily routines, we don’t just build better structures—we build a better industry and a more fulfilling life.

How do you balance your different roles while leading effectively? And how do you encourage mutual commitment within your team? Let’s discuss.
